Will there be a solar eclipse in 2020?
Space & NavigationSolar Eclipses in 2020: A Celestial Treat!
Hey skywatchers, remember 2020? It was a pretty special year if you’re into cosmic events because we were treated to not one, but two solar eclipses! Depending on where you were on the globe, you might have had a front-row seat to some seriously cool celestial action.
The Annular Eclipse: Ring of Fire (June 21, 2020)
First up, on June 21st, we had an annular solar eclipse. Now, what’s that all about? Well, it happens when the Moon is a bit farther away from us, making it look smaller in the sky than the Sun. So, instead of completely blocking the Sun, you get this incredible “ring of fire” effect – the Moon’s silhouetted against a bright ring of sunlight. The path where you could see this full ring stretched across central Africa and into southern Asia. If you were in Africa, eastern Europe, or a good chunk of Asia, you probably caught at least a partial glimpse of the eclipse. It wasn’t a total blackout, but still, pretty neat! The eclipse had a magnitude of 0.994.
Total Solar Eclipse: Darkness Descends (December 14, 2020)
Then, to cap off the year, December 14th brought us a total solar eclipse. This is the big one, folks! This is when the Moon lines up perfectly and completely blocks the Sun, plunging everything into an eerie twilight. It’s a truly unforgettable experience if you ever get the chance to witness it. The prime viewing spot this time was in southern Chile and Argentina – talk about a stunning backdrop! Even if you weren’t in the path of totality, you might have seen a partial eclipse if you were in other parts of South America, Southern Africa, or even Antarctica. The eclipse had a magnitude of 1.0254.
So, there you have it – 2020 gave us both an annular and a total solar eclipse. Two very different, but equally amazing, shows in the sky! If you missed them, don’t worry, there are always more cosmic wonders on the horizon. Keep looking up!
