Ever wondered where all that cool NASA research happens? Well, a good chunk of it goes down at NASA Ames Research Center. You’ll find it smack-dab in the middle of California’s Silicon Valley. More precisely, it calls Moffett Federal Airfield in Mountain View, California, home. Think of it this way: hop off US 101 at the Moffett Field exit, and you’re basically there. Now, a little history. Back in 1939, before NASA was even a twinkle in anyone’s eye, it started as the second lab for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). The location was chosen strategically. You see, all the big airplane manufacturers were out on the West Coast, in places like Los Angeles and Seattle. Plus, the Bay Area already had a solid reputation for building things. They even named it after Joseph Sweetman Ames, a smart physicist and one of the NACA’s founding fathers. Pretty cool, huh?

Since NASA came to be in 1958, Ames has been a real workhorse. While it’s not where rockets launch from, Ames has been crucial to tons of space missions. They’ve made huge contributions to things like astrobiology, figuring out how to fly better planes, and developing all sorts of wild new technologies for exploring space.
