Think of it as the opposite of upwelling, where the deep ocean surfaces. Downwelling is when surface waters get pushed down. But where exactly does this happen? Well, it’s all about winds, currents, and the shape of the coastline.
So, what makes water sink, anyway? A few things, actually. First off, if surface water becomes denser than the water below, gravity kicks in, and down she goes! This density increase can happen in a few ways.
Wind is a big player. Imagine wind blowing along the coast, shoving the water towards the land. That’s where something called “Ekman transport” comes in. Basically, in the Northern Hemisphere, the water doesn’t move exactly where the wind is blowing; it veers off to the right by about 90 degrees. In the Southern Hemisphere? It goes left. So, when the wind’s just right, it forces the water towards the coast, it piles up, and bam – downwelling!
Ocean currents also play a role. When currents smash into each other, the water has nowhere to go but down. Think of it like a crowded dance floor – eventually, someone’s gonna get pushed down!
And don’t forget good old density. If the surface water gets colder, saltier, or both (like when sea ice forms and leaves the salt behind), it becomes denser and sinks. Simple as that.

- The Pacific Northwest Coast (USA): During fall and winter, the winds shift, and we get downwelling conditions. The water gets pushed towards the shore, and down it goes.
- West Coast of Alaska: This area is also prone to downwelling, thanks to the winds in the Gulf of Alaska.
- Labrador Coast (Canada): This is where things get interesting! You’ve got the Gulf Stream, the Labrador Current, and the East Greenland Current all meeting up. It’s a recipe for downwelling!
- Any upwelling location: Here’s a fun fact: if the winds change direction in an area that usually has upwelling, you can get downwelling instead! Mother Nature loves to keep us on our toes.
Now, what does downwelling do? It’s not just a cool ocean trick. It has some serious effects.
First, it carries oxygen-rich water down to the depths. This is super important for all the creatures living down there. They need oxygen to breathe, just like us!
However, unlike upwelling, downwelling isn’t great for bringing nutrients to the surface. In fact, it usually leads to lower biological productivity. Think of it this way: downwelling is like taking the food away from the surface, which isn’t ideal for the little guys that need it to survive.
