Forget Gym Leaders! Alola shakes things up with the Island Challenge, and at the heart of it all are the Trial Captains. These experienced trainers aren’t just standing around; they’re your guides through unique trials designed to test your Pokémon prowess. You don’t actually fight them during the initial trials, but trust me, you’ll get your chance, especially during Mina’s trial and some cool post-game content. So, where do you find these folks? Let’s dive in.
Meet the Captains
Across Alola’s four islands, you’ll find eight official Trial Captains. Each one’s a specialist in a particular Pokémon type, and they’ve cooked up trials that’ll really put your skills to the test.
Melemele Island: Ilima
First up, Ilima, the Normal-type guru. You’ll first bump into him at the Trainer’s School on Route 1. Remember that battle in Hau’oli City during the tutorial? That was him! Later on, during Mina’s Trial, he’s hanging out at Hau’oli Cemetery. Oh, and here’s a neat little secret: after you’ve conquered the Elite Four and snagged that Everstone, have a chat with Ilima. You’ll trigger a fun little event and even score the trial guide trainer outfit. Talk about a reward!
Akala Island: The Trio
Akala Island boasts three captains, each with their own unique flair.
- Lana: This Water-type whiz’s trial is at Brooklet Hill. Now, during Mina’s Trial, you’ll find her in Lush Jungle in Ultra Moon. Finding Lana can be a bit of a quest in itself! Head to her place in Konikoni City, and sneak into the back room. You’ll find her sisters eager for a playdate (a battle, that is!). Beat them, and Lana will make her grand entrance.
- Kiawe: Fire’s his game, and Wela Volcano Park is where he sets his stage. During Mina’s Trial, you’ll find him right back at Wela Volcano Park. Want a peek into his personal life? At night, swing by Kiawe’s house in Paniola Town, head upstairs, and you might just catch him practicing his fire dancing in his room. Talk about dedication!
- Mallow: Grass-type goodness awaits you in Lush Jungle, thanks to Mallow. During Mina’s Trial, she’s back in Lush Jungle, but only in Ultra Sun this time. If you’re looking for her outside of the trial, check the Konikoni City restaurant during the day.
Ula’ula Island: Sophocles and Acerola
- Sophocles: Got a thing for Electric-types? Then head to Hokulani Observatory on Mount Hokulani, where Sophocles holds court. During Mina’s Trial, guess where he is? Yep, Hokulani Observatory. The tricky thing about Sophocles is that you mostly battle him when he challenges you for your Champion title.
- Acerola: Ghost-types more your style? Acerola’s trial is at the Abandoned Thrifty Megamart on Route 14. But here’s the twist: Acerola eventually becomes part of the Elite Four! So, get ready to face her a few times.
Poni Island: Mina
- Mina: Last but not least, we have Mina, the Fairy-type Trial Captain of Poni Island. You can find her chilling at her home in Seafolk Village. Look for the Whiscash-shaped boat – you can’t miss it!
Mina’s Petal-Collecting Quest
After your initial scrap with Mina in Seafolk Village, she sends you on a bit of a scavenger hunt: collecting petals from the other Trial Captains. This means retracing your steps and, yep, battling them again!
A Few Pointers
- Keep in mind that the Trial Captain you battle in Lush Jungle during Mina’s Trial depends on which version you’re playing: Mallow in Ultra Sun, Lana in Ultra Moon.
- Some of these captains, like Sophocles, don’t offer many battle opportunities outside of Mina’s Trial and his Champion challenges. So, seize the chance when you get it!
- Fun fact: Trial Captains apparently hang up their hats by the time they hit 20. Who knew?
So there you have it! With this guide in hand, you’re all set to track down and rebattle the Trial Captains in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. It’s a fantastic way to add an extra layer of challenge and fun to your Alolan adventure. Happy hunting, trainers!
