When was the last time we had a total lunar eclipse?
Space & NavigationRemember That Blood Moon? The Last Total Lunar Eclipse
Okay, space fans, let’s talk about that awesome celestial show we had not too long ago. If you were up late (or really early!) on March 13-14, 2025, and had clear skies, you might have caught it: the last total lunar eclipse! For those of us in North and South America, plus parts of Europe and Africa, it was quite a sight.
You know, a total lunar eclipse is one of those events that just makes you stop and stare. It’s when the Earth plays shadow puppet, sliding right between the Sun and the Moon. This blocks the sun’s light, usually turning the moon a striking reddish color – hence the nickname “blood moon.” Pretty cool, huh?
I remember setting my alarm to catch the peak of the eclipse. According to TimeandDate.com, the full show really got going around 2:36 a.m. EDT on March 14, hitting its maximum brightness at 2:58 a.m. EDT. It wrapped up the total phase around 3:31 a.m. EDT. The whole thing, from the moment the Earth’s shadow started creeping across the moon until it was all over, lasted a good six hours!
Missed it? No worries! The cosmos is always putting on a show. Mark your calendars, because the next total lunar eclipse is coming up on September 7, 2025. Plenty of time to find a good viewing spot!
