When was quartz founded?
Regional SpecificsSo, you’re curious about Quartz, the online news source? Well, it all started back in 2012 when Atlantic Media decided to launch something new in the heart of New York City. Think of it as a digital-native news hub specifically tailored for business folks navigating the ever-evolving global economy. September 24, 2012, marked its official debut.
What’s interesting is that the founding team wasn’t exactly new to the news game. We’re talking about people who sharpened their skills at places like Bloomberg, The Economist, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. Big names like Kevin Delaney, who used to run WSJ.com, Zach Seward, the social media whiz from the WSJ, and Gideon Lichfield, a global news guru from The Economist, were all part of the initial dream team.
Now, here’s where the story gets a bit twisty. Quartz didn’t just stick with its original owner. In 2018, Atlantic Media handed the reins over to Uzabase, a Japanese company specializing in business intelligence and media. But fast forward to November 2020, and the plot thickens: Uzabase decided to sell Quartz to its very own staff! Talk about an interesting turn of events. Then, in April 2022, G/O Media stepped in and acquired the site. And just when you thought the ownership saga was over, in April 2025, G/O Media sold Quartz to Redbrick, a Canadian software firm. It’s been quite the journey!
Content-wise, Quartz really dives deep into international business news. They cover everything from the global economy and the latest tech innovations to money matters, market trends, leadership insights, and even lifestyle topics. The main goal? To deliver insightful journalism that resonates with the new wave of business leaders. What sets Quartz apart is its knack for innovative storytelling, its reliance on solid data, and its eye-catching design.
They’ve also spread their wings over the years. Quartz India and Quartz Africa came onto the scene in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Plus, they rolled out Atlas in 2015, which is basically a playground for creating charts.
You’ll find Quartz’s headquarters buzzing with activity in New York City, but they’ve also got correspondents and reporters scattered around the globe – think Hong Kong, India, London, Los Angeles, and Thailand, just to name a few. They’re truly everywhere!
