Why Greenwich? Well, a lot of ships were already using charts based on it. Plus, the United States had already adopted it for their time zones. It just made sense.
Of course, not everyone jumped on board right away. France, for example, stuck with the Paris Meridian until 1911!
The Modern Twist: A Slight Shift
Here’s another interesting tidbit: while the Greenwich Meridian was the go-to standard for a century, things have shifted slightly. Today, the official standard is the IERS (International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service) Reference Meridian (IRM). This one’s based on satellite data and is a smidge – about 102.5 meters – east of the old Greenwich Meridian. So, when you visit Greenwich and stand on that famous line, remember your GPS is actually referencing a slightly different spot!
Why Meridians Matter
So, why should you care about meridians? Because they’re essential for:
- Navigation: Meridians, working with latitude lines, create a grid that lets us pinpoint any location on Earth. Without them, getting around would be a whole lot harder!
- Timekeeping: The Earth is sliced into time zones based on meridians, roughly 15 degrees of longitude apart. As you travel east or west, the time changes by an hour for every 15 degrees you cross.
- GPS: Your phone’s GPS relies on super-accurate latitude and longitude measurements to figure out exactly where you are.
