As magma begins to cool – both below and above ground – mineral crystals in the melt will begin to form and precipitate, in a process called crystallization (the solidification of atoms or molecules into a highly structured form called a crystal).

What is crystallisation of magma?

The minerals that make up igneous rocks crystallize (solidify, freeze) at a range of different temperatures. This explains why cooling magma can have some crystals within it and yet remain predominantly liquid.

How do crystals form in magma?

Extrusive rock, by contrast, forms when magma reaches the surface and cools quickly as lava. Trapped underground, that melted rock cooled slowly, allowing molecules to move past each other until they found another of the same shape to which to stick, forming crystals.

Where are crystals formed?

In underground cavities, crystals grow through atoms that connect in regular three-dimensional patterns. Each crystal starts small and grows as more atoms are added. Many grow in water that is rich of dissolved minerals. However, this is not a condition, crystals can also grow from molten rock or even fumes.
