Simply put, perpendicularity describes what happens when two lines, line segments, or rays meet at a perfect right angle. Remember those right angles? They’re the ones that measure exactly 90 degrees – like the corner of a square. When lines intersect and create that perfect 90-degree angle, bam! They’re perpendicular. The word itself comes from Latin, “perpendicularis,” which basically meant a plumb line – something hanging straight down.
We even have a symbol for it: “⊥”. So, if you see AB ⊥ CD, it just means line AB is perpendicular to line CD. The point where these lines cross is called the “foot of the perpendicular.” Fancy, right?
Now, how do you actually know if lines are perpendicular? Easy. Grab a protractor and measure the angle where they meet. If it’s 90 degrees, you’ve got yourself a perpendicular intersection. That’s where Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) comes in. It’s a system engineers use to specify exactly how perpendicular something needs to be. Think of it as a super-precise way of saying, “This has got to be square!” GD&T uses special symbols and tolerances on engineering drawings to make sure everyone knows the requirements. It helps machinists and inspectors understand just how accurate the part needs to be.
