Was there an earthquake last night in San Jose?
Regional SpecificsSan Jose Earthquake Update: Did the Ground Move Last Night?
Living in San Jose, you get used to the occasional tremor. After all, we’re smack-dab in earthquake country! So, the question on everyone’s mind this morning: did we have one last night?
Let’s get straight to it. As of today, August 11, 2025, it looks like there was a tiny rumble at 10:14 AM yesterday, about 10 miles east of Seven Trees. Clocking in at a magnitude of just 1.4, it probably didn’t even register for most folks. I know I didn’t feel anything!
What’s Been Shaking Around Here Lately?
While we haven’t had “the big one” recently, it’s worth keeping an eye on the smaller quakes. They’re a good reminder that we live in an active zone.
- The Last 24 Hours: Apparently, there were a couple of these little guys – nothing bigger than that 1.4 one. Some sources say San Jose hasn’t had any earthquakes above magnitude 1.5.
- The Past Week: Things have been a bit busier, with around 33 quakes within 60 miles of San Jose. Most of these were pretty small, but about five of them were above magnitude 2. Still, likely nothing you’d spill your coffee over.
A Little Earthquake History
Of course, San Jose has seen its share of serious shakers over the years. The 1906 earthquake, a massive 7.9, hit about 46 miles from here. And more recently, in 2021, we had a magnitude 6 jolt that definitely got everyone’s attention.
Staying Safe and Informed
The best thing we can do is stay informed and be prepared. Here are a few resources I always check:
- USGS (United States Geological Survey): These guys are the go-to source for real-time earthquake info.
- Earthquake Track: Great for a quick overview of recent quakes in the area and around the world.
- VolcanoDiscovery: They keep a running list of the latest earthquakes near San Jose, updated practically every minute.
So, there you have it. No major shaking and baking last night, but it’s always good to be aware. Stay safe, San Jose!
