Was there an earthquake in Vancouver yesterday?
Regional SpecificsWas There an Earthquake in Vancouver Yesterday? Let’s Check the Rumblings…
Okay, so you’re wondering if Vancouver shook things up yesterday with an earthquake. As of today, August 8, 2025, the answer is a resounding no—at least, nothing significant enough to make the news or rattle your coffee cup.
Now, don’t get me wrong, British Columbia is definitely earthquake country. We get tremors all the time! In fact, the province records thousands of earthquakes every year. Most are so small you wouldn’t even notice, but around 50 or so are actually felt. And, just to keep things interesting, we get a quake strong enough to potentially cause some damage about once a decade. It’s just part of living here!
While Vancouver Island remained still yesterday, BC has had its fair share of recent seismic activity. The strongest earthquake near Vancouver in the last decade was a magnitude 4.8 that occurred back on February 21, 2025. That one was centered about 40 km northwest of West Vancouver. I remember that day; a few things rattled on my shelves, but nothing fell over.
Looking at the bigger picture, EarthquakeTrack.com tells us that there was one minor earthquake (magnitude 1.5 or greater) in British Columbia in the last 24 hours, but that one was actually over the border in Forks, Washington. Over the past week, there have been eight earthquakes, and in the last 30 days, there have been 22 earthquakes in British Columbia. The largest earthquake in British Columbia this year was a magnitude 6.5 earthquake in Prince Rupert, British Columbia.
So, what’s the takeaway? No earthquake in Vancouver yesterday, but it’s always a good idea to be prepared. Check out resources like the Earthquake Data Dashboard from Ocean Networks Canada – it’s a cool, interactive way to see recent earthquakes near Vancouver Island and around the world. Also, mark your calendars for the Great British Columbia ShakeOut, the annual earthquake drill. It’s a great chance to practice your “drop, cover, and hold on” skills and make sure your emergency kit is up to date. Stay safe, Vancouver!
