Was there an earthquake in Mexico City yesterday?
Regional SpecificsDid Mexico City Shake Yesterday? Let’s Check the Facts.
So, did Mexico City experience an earthquake yesterday? As of today, August 6, 2025, the answer is no—at least, not according to the latest reports.
Now, Mexico is a different story. That whole area is pretty active when it comes to seismic events. In fact, EarthquakesTrack.com tells us there have been seventeen earthquakes rumbling through Mexico in the last 24 hours! But thankfully, none of those were centered in the capital.
Instead, it seems the earth wiggled a bit down in Oaxaca. A light magnitude 3.4 earthquake hit about 42 km southeast of Crucecita yesterday. But don’t worry, it was too far away to cause any shaking in Mexico City, which sits a good 555 km (345 mi) from the epicenter.
Thinking back a few days, though, things were a little different. On August 2nd, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck southeast of Tuxtepec, Oaxaca. I remember reading about that one! Apparently, an estimated 10 million people felt those tremors, including folks in Mexico City. While it was strong enough to rattle some doors and furniture, thankfully, it didn’t cause any serious damage or injuries. Oaxaca is known for these things; that August 2nd event was one of the strongest since a magnitude 5.9 quake back in October 2023. So, while Mexico City was quiet yesterday, the earth down south is keeping things interesting, to say the least!
