Is a VEI 9 eruption possible?

It is possible that evidence for a VEI 9 eruption exists and is buried in the geologic record. Eruptions that large would be very rare events, but it is impossible to say that eruptions that large have never occurred.

What was the last VEI 8 eruption?

No VEI-8 eruption has occurred in recent human history. The most recent such eruption is the Oruanui eruption that formed Lake Taupo, roughly 26,500 years before present.

Is Cumbre Vieja an explosive volcano?

The Cumbre Vieja eruption in 2021 was the most protracted and disruptive volcanic eruption in the recent history of the Canary Island of La Palma. More than 1,600 structures, including about 1,300 residential buildings, were destroyed or damaged.

How big is a VEI 6 eruption?

Volcanic eruptions that rated 6 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index. Such eruptions release a tephra volume of at least 10 km3 (2.4 cu mi) with profound long-term effects on the surrounding area and noticeable short-term effects on global climate.

What VEI is Yellowstone?

Yellowstone is now perhaps the most famous of the world’s volcanoes that have produced VEI 8 eruptions.

What is the highest VEI ever recorded?

1. Yellowstone eruption, 640,000 years ago (VEI 8)

When did VEI 7 erupt last?

The last VEI 7 eruption, Tambora, occurred ∼200 yr ago. Ideally, we would like to have had data from many such past eruptions to assess natural variability of climatic impacts, and to identify the most robust signals from such large eruptions, but we have had only a few to assess within historical time.

When did VEI 6 erupt last?

1991

All three have researched the VEI-5 eruption of Mount St Helens in Washington state in 1980, and the VEI-6 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991. Those events killed dozens to hundreds of people and disrupted entire regions.

What VEI was Pompeii?

The VEI has been determined for more than 5,000 eruptions in the last 10,000 years. None of these eruptions rates the maximum VEI of 8. For example, the eruption of Vesuvius Volcano in A.D. 79, which destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum, only rates a VEI of 5.

Which 1980 eruption was proof that a volcano could collapse?

1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens

1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens
VEI 5
Impact Approximately 57 deaths, about $1.1 billion in property damage (or $3.6 billion today, adjusted for inflation); caused a collapse of the volcano’s northern flank, deposited ash in 11 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces
Map of eruption deposits

How much of La Palma is covered in lava?

The map of the active lava flows at La Palma between 7 October and 1000 on . The total area covered by the flows is 8.7 km2 while the lava delta on the W coast is 0.3 km2.

Can lava turn blue?

Blue lava, also known as Api Biru, and simply referred to as blue fire or sulfur fire, is a phenomenon that occurs when sulfur burns. It is an electric-blue flame that has the illusory appearance of lava.

What is the most active supervolcano?

Taupo erupted 22,600 years ago and is the most recent supereruption on Earth (with a volume of about 1,130 cubic kilometers). Additional volcanoes capable of producing supereruptions include the large caldera volcanoes of Japan, Indonesia, and South America.

What are the 3 super volcanoes in the US?

The United States is home to three active supervolcanoes, the USGS has determined: The famous Yellowstone, Long Valley and the Valles Caldera in New Mexico.

How high does the VEI scale go?

0 to 8

Classification. With indices running from 0 to 8, the VEI associated with an eruption is dependent on how much volcanic material is thrown out, to what height, and how long the eruption lasts. The scale is logarithmic from VEI-2 and up; an increase of 1 index indicates an eruption that is 10 times as powerful.

What is the chance of Yellowstone erupting?

ANSWER: Although it is possible, scientists are not convinced that there will ever be another catastrophic eruption at Yellowstone. Given Yellowstone’s past history, the yearly probability of another caldera-forming eruption can be approximated as 1 in 730,000 or 0.00014%.

What would happen if Popocatepetl erupted?

The last such eruption at Popocatepetl was around A.D. 800. The eruption destroyed nearby settlements and culminated in mudflows that blanketed the Puebla Valley. An eruption of this magnitude today would endanger hundreds of thousands of lives.

When was the last time Popo erupted?

Popocatépetl volcano – an active stratovolcano located just 43 miles (70 km) southeast of Mexico City – had two explosions yesterday (September 9, 2022) before dawn local time. The name Popocatépetl is pronounced poh-poh-kah-TEH-peh-til.

What does Popocatépetl mean in English?

Popocatépetl is a volcano located in central Mexico. It lies on the border of the states of México and Puebla, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) southeast of Mexico City. Popocatépetl means “smoking mountain” in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztec civilization.
