The Great Lakes and the Mighty Mississippi: More Connected Than You Think
FactsThe Great Lakes and the Mighty Mississippi: More Connected Than You Think
Okay, so you might think of the Mississippi River, that iconic American waterway, as starting way up north at Lake Itasca in Minnesota. And you wouldn’t be wrong! But here’s a little secret: the Great Lakes, especially Lake Michigan, have a sneaky, indirect connection to the Big Muddy. It’s not a direct pour-over situation, but it’s a relationship that’s shaped cities, economies, and even ecosystems.
Think of it like this: imagine two giant water systems, side by side. Now, picture a clever bit of engineering that links them together. That’s essentially what happened with the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC). Back in the day, Chicago had a bit of a sanitation problem. The Chicago River was, well, let’s just say it wasn’t the cleanest. So, they did something pretty radical: they reversed the river’s flow! Instead of emptying into Lake Michigan (Chicago’s drinking water source, mind you), it was diverted towards the Des Plaines River, which eventually joins the Illinois River, and bam, you’re on your way to the Mississippi.
This wasn’t just about clean water, though. The CSSC, finished way back in 1900, also created a superhighway for boats. Before that, there was the Illinois and Michigan Canal (I&M Canal), a 96-mile ditch dug by hand that connected the Great Lakes to the Mississippi starting in 1848. It was a big deal for trade, turning Chicago into a boomtown. The CSSC was basically the I&M Canal on steroids – wider, deeper, and ready for bigger ships.
Today, the Illinois Waterway, a 336-mile network of rivers, lakes, and canals, keeps that connection alive. It’s like a liquid conveyor belt, moving goods from the Great Lakes all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. Eight locks and dams along the way keep everything flowing smoothly.
But here’s where things get a little tricky. This human-made connection has some ecological downsides. Think of it as opening a door between two different worlds. Sometimes, unwanted guests – like invasive species – sneak through. Asian carp, for example, are a major concern, and folks are working hard to keep them out of the Great Lakes with things like electric barriers in the CSSC.
Chicago itself owes its very existence to this watery link. Sitting smack-dab in the middle of the continent, it became a hub for everything, all thanks to its access to both the Great Lakes and the Mississippi. From Native American portages to massive shipping canals, water has always been Chicago’s lifeblood.
So, the next time you think about the Mississippi River, remember that it’s not just about Lake Itasca. Lake Michigan, through a series of clever (and sometimes controversial) engineering feats, plays a supporting role in the story of this mighty river. It’s a tale of human ingenuity, economic growth, and the ongoing challenge of balancing our needs with the health of the environment. It’s a pretty cool story, when you think about it.
