This guide will give you the lowdown on everything you need to know about the Niagara Falls light show, so you can plan your visit and be ready to be amazed.

A Little History of Lighting Up the Falls

Believe it or not, the idea of lighting up Niagara Falls isn’t new. Back in 1860, they used Bengal lights – kind of like super-bright fireworks – to celebrate a visit from the Prince of Wales. Pretty cool, huh? Electricity came along later, and by 1907, they were even using colored gels to add some pizzazz.

Fast forward to 1925, and the Niagara Falls Illumination Board was created. This is a joint U.S.-Canadian group that’s been in charge of the nightly illuminations ever since. They only took a break during World War II. Can you imagine the Falls in the dark during that time?

The lighting system has gotten a serious upgrade over the years. In 2016, they unveiled a brand-new, $4 million system. It’s twice as bright, has way more colors, and uses a fraction of the energy. • February 1 – March 11: 5:30 PM – 1:00 AM
• March 12 – March 31: 7:30 PM – 1:00 AM

• August 1 – 15: 8:00 PM – 2:00 AM
• August 16 – 31: 7:30 PM – 2:00 AM

• October 1 – 15: 6:15 PM – 2:00 AM

“Inspired by Nature”: A Little Extra Magic

Want something even more special? Check out the “Inspired by Nature” display. It’s a five-minute show that celebrates the Falls’ natural beauty. You can catch it three times every hour, on the half hour. Show times are 7:30 PM, 8:30 PM, 9:30 PM, 10:30 PM, and 11:30 PM, but remember, it all depends on when the regular illumination starts.

Where’s the Best Spot to Watch?

Okay, so you know when to go, but where should you go? Here are a few of my favorite spots:

• Table Rock Welcome Centre (Canada): You can practically feel the mist from here! It’s an amazing close-up view of the Horseshoe Falls.
• Queen Victoria Park (Canada): This park gives you a fantastic panoramic view of the whole scene. Perfect for photos!
• Prospect Point (USA): Over on the U.S. side, Prospect Point offers a great view of the American Falls and a glimpse of the Canadian Falls.
• Niagara SkyWheel (Canada): Want a bird’s-eye view? Hop on the SkyWheel for an unforgettable perspective.
• Fallsview Hotels (Canada): If you really want to treat yourself, book a room at one of the Fallsview hotels. Waking up to that view is priceless!

Special Occasions, Special Colors

Throughout the year, the Illumination Board will light up the falls in special colors to recognize important dates and support charities.

Don’t Forget the Fireworks!

As if the lights weren’t enough, Niagara Falls also puts on a spectacular fireworks show! From May 16th to October 13th in 2025, you can catch the fireworks at 10:00 PM every night. Plus, there are special shows on Canada Day (July 1st) and New Year’s Eve (December 31st). Queen Victoria Park in Canada and Prospect Point Park in the USA are your best bets for viewing.
