And while the daytime views are undeniably spectacular, wait until you see it at night. Seriously, the nightly illumination transforms the Falls into something truly magical – a kaleidoscope of color dancing across the cascading water. So, is it really lit up every single night? You bet it is!

Now, the idea of lighting up Niagara isn’t exactly new. Picture this: back in 1860, they used these things called Bengal lights – basically super bright flares – to celebrate a visit from the Prince of Wales. Pretty cool, huh? That was just a one-off, though. The first electric illumination came later, in 1879, when Princess Louise came to town.

Fast forward to the roaring twenties. A bunch of local business guys, nicknamed “the generators,” started pushing for a proper, permanent lighting setup. And guess what? They succeeded! The Niagara Falls Illumination Board was born in 1925, and they’ve been in charge of keeping the Falls lit up ever since. Well, except for a little break during World War II when they turned off the lights.

Over the years, the lighting system has gotten a major glow-up. Think brighter colors, more oomph, and way more energy efficiency. In 2016, they dropped a cool $4 million on a complete overhaul, swapping out the old xenon lights for super-smart LEDs. The result? Double the brightness, a rainbow of new colors, and a whopping 82% reduction in energy use! Talk about a win-win.

These days, some lucky person sits in the Illumination Tower, wielding the power of two tablets to control the whole dazzling display. It’s like being a DJ for a waterfall! The lights themselves are strategically placed in three key spots: the Illumination Tower, the roof of Table Rock Centre right at the edge of the Horseshoe Falls, and way down in the Niagara Gorge across from the American Falls.

Want to catch the show? The Niagara Falls Illumination Board posts a nightly schedule, but generally, the lights switch on around dusk and stay on until 1:00 AM or 2:00 AM. So, for late August 2025, you’re looking at lights from 7:30 PM to 2:00 AM. Perfect for a late-night stroll!
