LA SPORTIVA Helios III: A Trail Runner’s Delight? My Take After a Muddy Month
ReviewOkay, real talk: finding the perfect trail running shoe is like searching for the Holy Grail. As someone who spends more time dodging tree roots than pounding pavement, I’m always on the hunt for that magical combo of feeling the trail and not feeling every single rock underfoot. So, when the LA SPORTIVA Helios III landed on my doorstep, I was itching to get them dirty. After a solid month of testing – think slick climbs, muddy descents, and the occasional face-plant (don’t judge) – here’s my honest take.
First off, these shoes look the part. The yellow and black color scheme is sharp, and the upper is this crazy mix of materials that La Sportiva calls a “Mono-bava protective net” and a bunch of other techy-sounding stuff. Honestly, all you need to know is that they feel light but tough, like they can handle some serious abuse. And that low-cut ankle? Total freedom. My feet felt nimble and quick, which is exactly what you want when you’re navigating tricky terrain.
Out on the trail, the cushioning struck me as just right. It’s not like running on marshmallows – you still get that ground feel, which is key for staying upright – but it definitely takes the edge off those sharp rocks and roots. I’ve definitely run in shoes where my feet felt like they were taking a beating, but not with these.

Now, let’s talk grip. The FriXion® Blue sole with the Impact Brake System™ is legit. I swear, I felt like a mountain goat in these things. I tackled some seriously steep, slippery sections that usually have me tiptoeing, and the Helios III just gripped and ripped. No sliding, no drama, just pure confidence. There was this one time on a particularly muddy trail where I was sure I was going down, but these shoes just dug in and saved the day. Seriously, they’re like having four-wheel drive for your feet.
The Good Stuff:
- Grip for Days: That FriXion® Blue sole is the real deal.
- Light and Fast: You won’t feel like you’re lugging bricks around.
- Goldilocks Cushioning: Not too soft, not too hard, just right.
- Built to Last: These things seem tough as nails.
A Few Minor Gripes:
- Cushioning: If you’re a die-hard maximalist runner who likes a super plush ride, these might not be your jam for super long distances.
- “No featured offers available”: It can be confusing for a customer to understand why there are no featured offers available.
The Verdict:
All in all, the LA SPORTIVA Helios III are a fantastic choice for trail runners who want a shoe that’s grippy, agile, and lets them feel connected to the trail. If you’re all about bombing down technical trails and want a shoe that can keep up, these are definitely worth checking out. I’m giving them a solid 4 out of 5 stars – they’ve earned a permanent spot in my trail running rotation.
