Kelty Redwing 50: A Modern Take on a Classic Pack (Review)
ReviewThe Kelty Redwing. Just the name conjures up images of dusty trails and weekend adventures, doesn’t it? This pack has been a mainstay for years, a real workhorse for backpackers. So, when I heard Kelty had given it a makeover with the Redwing 50, I was itching to see what they’d changed and, more importantly, if it still had that classic Kelty magic. Let’s dive in.
Okay, first impressions? It feels like a Kelty. That rugged, dependable vibe is definitely there. You know, the kind that makes you think, “Yeah, this thing can handle anything.” But it’s not just the same old pack. Kelty’s clearly been tinkering, adding some smart updates that caught my eye right away.
So, what’s new and noteworthy?
- 50 Liters of Space: For me, this is the Goldilocks size. Perfect for a weekend jaunt, or even a longer trip if you’re a packing ninja.
- FIT-Pro Adjustment: A Custom Fit? Kelty’s making a big deal about this, promising a quick and easy way to dial in the fit. We’ve all been there, right? Struggling with a pack that just doesn’t sit right, leading to aching shoulders. If this works, it’s a game-changer.
- AMP-Flow: Say Goodbye to Swamp Back: Seriously, who likes a sweaty back clinging to their pack? This ventilated panel promises to keep things cool and dry. Fingers crossed!
- U-Zipper: Access All Areas: Top-loading for stuffing gear? Check. Panel-loading for grabbing that buried item? Check. This hybrid design gives you the best of both worlds.
- Weight Watcher: Coming in at just over 2 pounds, it’s not going to break your back before you even hit the trail. Not bad at all for a pack this size and with these features.

Now, let’s imagine this thing in action. Picture this: a weekend hike in the Adirondacks. Crisp air, stunning views, and…me, happily hauling my gear in the Redwing 50. I can already see myself using that U-zipper to grab my rain jacket without having to unpack everything at the summit. Been there, done that, hated that.
And that FIT-Pro system? I’m banking on it to keep my shoulders happy, even as I shed layers throughout the day. No more constant adjustments and fidgeting – that’s the dream, anyway.
Then there’s the AMP-Flow back panel. If it lives up to the hype, it’ll be a total game-changer on those uphill climbs. Seriously, a dry back is a happy back.
The Good Stuff:
- Kelty’s a name you can trust – they’ve been doing this for ages.
- 50 liters is a seriously versatile size for all kinds of trips.
- Those modern updates, like the FIT-Pro and AMP-Flow, sound really promising.
- The U-Zipper gives you options for accessing your gear.
- It’s surprisingly light for what you get.
A Couple of Minor Gripes:
- I’d love more info on the sleeping bag compartment. Is there one? How big is it?
- Also, it would be great to know if it uses any recycled materials.

Honestly, the Kelty Redwing 50 looks like a winner. It takes a classic design and gives it a modern twist with some really smart features. If you’re after a versatile, dependable backpack that won’t weigh you down, the Redwing 50 is definitely worth a look. I’m already planning my next adventure with it!
