Is tonight a flower moon?

Catching the Flower Moon: Did You Miss It?

So, you’re wondering if tonight’s the night for the Flower Moon, huh? Well, whether you’ll catch it in all its glory depends on the date. The Flower Moon, that lovely name for May’s full moon, peaked on Monday, May 12th, 2025, at 12:56 P.M. EDT. Bummer if you missed that exact moment, but don’t fret! The moon usually looks pretty darn full for a couple of nights before and after its peak.

Flower Moon? Tell Me More!

Where does that charming name “Flower Moon” come from? It’s mostly thanks to Algonquin peoples, who noticed all the wildflowers bursting into bloom during May. Makes perfect sense, right? Other cultures had their own names for it too, like the Milk Moon, Budding Moon, or even Dancing Moon – all hinting at that feeling of springtime growth and fresh starts. It really shows you how connected people used to be (and still are!) to the rhythms of nature.

Mark Your Calendars: The Next Full Moon is Coming!

Okay, so maybe you missed the Flower Moon this time around. No biggie! The next one up is the Strawberry Moon on June 11, 2025. After that, we’ve got a whole lineup of moons with awesome names to look forward to:

  • July: Buck Moon
  • August: Sturgeon Moon
  • September: Corn Moon
  • October: Hunter’s Moon
  • November: Beaver Moon
  • December: Cold Moon

I always find it fun to think about why each moon got its name. It’s like a little history lesson in the sky!

Full Moon 101: The Science Behind the Shine

Ever wonder why we get a full moon? It’s all about positioning. When the Earth lines up just right between the Sun and the Moon, the whole face of the moon gets lit up by sunlight. And remember, the moon doesn’t actually make light; it’s just reflecting the sun’s rays back to us. That changing angle of sunlight is what gives us all those cool lunar phases throughout the month.

More Than Just a Pretty Face: The Flower Moon’s Spiritual Side

Beyond the science, the Flower Moon also carries a special kind of vibe. It’s often seen as a time for growth, abundance, and turning over a new leaf. A chance to appreciate the beauty around us, focus on what we want to change, and really nurture those intentions.

So, even if you missed the Flower Moon at its absolute fullest, take a peek at the sky anyway. Full moons are always worth a look, and thinking about the stories and meanings behind them just makes it that much more special. Who knows, maybe you’ll start your own tradition of celebrating the monthly moon cycle!
