As this plate plunges deep, the intense heat and pressure squeeze out water and other volatile stuff. This, in turn, melts the rock above, creating magma that rises to the surface and boom – you’ve got a volcano. Do enough of these in a line, and you’ve got an island arc.

The Indo-Australian, Eurasian, Philippine Sea, and Pacific Plates are all jostling for position, creating a geological pressure cooker. Ninety percent of the world’s earthquakes and three-quarters of its active volcanoes call this fiery ring home. So, yeah, Indonesia’s got company. With around 130 active volcanoes, it’s practically the volcano capital of the world!
Even today, the earth rumbles. Mount Merapi on Java is practically a celebrity, it erupts so often. As of August 2025, other active volcanoes include Lewotobi and Semeru. Mount Ruang’s eruption in April 2024 was a stark reminder that these geological giants are still very much awake.

The volcanic soil is incredibly fertile, perfect for growing everything from rice to coffee. Plus, geothermal energy offers a clean, renewable power source.
