Identification of Iguanodon and Maiasaura
Earth science
Asked by: Dennis Hartung
The easiest way to distinguish iguanodon from maiasaura is to look for iguanodon’s hands, which are very peculiar indeed. The hand has five digits. The thumb has a large, prominent spike on it for defensive purposes. The three middle fingers are fused and end in hoof-like nails for walking on all fours.

What are the characteristics of a Iguanodon?
Iguanodon is the name of a small group of dinosaurs within the much larger group called Iguanodontids; they were large herbivores, with a long tail for balance, and hind legs that were longer than their fore limbs. There were three large hooved toes on each foot, and four fingers and a thumb spike on each hand.
What does a Maiasaura look like?
Maiasaura were large, attaining a maximum known length of about 9 metres (30 ft). They had a flat beak typical of hadrosaurids, and thick noses. They had a small, spiky crest in front of the eyes. This crest may have been used in headbutting contests between males during the breeding season.

More Dinosaur Details
Iguanon had a really long little finger which it used to gather food. Their thumbs had spikes on top to help them stab food. And their teeth would be replaced throughout their lives to help them chew tough plants. They may also have used their thumb spike to protect themselves against predators.
Do Iguanodons have beaks?
These animals had large, tall but narrow skulls, with toothless beaks probably covered with keratin, and teeth like those of iguanas, as the name suggests, but much larger and more closely packed.
Where are Maiasaura found?
state of Montana
Maiasaura (meaning “good mother lizard”) is an extinct genus of large duck-billed dinosaur that lived in the area currently covered by the state of Montana in the Upper Cretaceous Period (Campanian), approximately 74 million years ago.
What type of dinosaur is Maiasaura?
hadrosaurs
Maiasaura, (genus Maiasaura), duck-billed dinosaurs (hadrosaurs) found as fossils from the Late Cretaceous Period (about 100 million to 65.5 million years old) of North America and whose discovery led to the theory that these bipedal herbivores cared for their young.
Did the Maiasaura have teeth?
Maiasaura had a toothless beak for snipping plants and hundreds of teeth designed for chewing and grinding. Although its teeth were frequently worn down by all the chewing, replacing them was not a problem. Each tooth had four or five teeth growing and ready to replace it.
Where is Iguanodon found?
