What is point cloud data in LiDAR?
Point cloud data is the term used to refer to the data points collected for a given geographical area, terrain, building or space. A LiDAR point cloud dataset is created when an area is scanned using light detection and ranging.
How do I get point cloud data?
There are two primary tools you can use to capture a point cloud: laser scanners and photogrammetry.
- Laser scanners. A laser scanner is a survey-grade system that includes a number of different sensors and technologies.
- Photogrammetry. This is more a methodology than a specific type of tool.
Is LiDAR and point cloud the same?

All point cloud data is very large and usually runs from 2GB up to 70GB, and sometimes more. Point cloud data can be stored on your servers, but the RCS files for use in Revit or AutoCAD should be located on the local machine in order to allow the Autodesk software to more quickly refresh views.
What is 2.5 D point cloud?
2.5D means that there’s no point that projects on top of other points when the cloud is projected along a specific dimension (generally Z). This generally means that the cloud has been acquired from a quite far distance without changing the orientation too much (e.g. with airborne LIDAR).
