Highland Outdoor 44L Backpack: Ready for Anything? My Take After a Weekend in the Wild

Review

Okay, so I’m a bit of an outdoorsy type. Day hikes? Love ’em. Weekend backpacking trips? Sign me up! Because of this, I’m always scouting for solid gear that won’t empty my wallet. That’s why the Highland Outdoor 44L Backpack caught my eye, and I had to get my hands on it.

First Impressions Matter, Right?

Straight out of the box, this backpack just looked ready for action. The black color is practical, nothing flashy. And the size? Forty-four liters seemed just about perfect for a weekend escape – spacious enough for the essentials, but not so huge that I’d be tempted to overpack (a constant struggle, trust me!). I was also stoked to see a dedicated laptop compartment; talk about versatility! This bag could pull double duty for outdoor adventures and my everyday grind.

Hitting the Trail:

I recently put this pack to the test on a two-day hike in the Smoky Mountains. Seriously, this was the perfect testing ground. The main compartment? It gobbled up my sleeping bag, a change of clothes, and my cooking kit without a peep. And that front accessory pocket with the organizer? Genius! It became my go-to spot for smaller necessities like my first-aid kit, map, and trusty compass.

Now, let’s talk comfort. The padded mesh shoulder straps and back panel were a game-changer on those uphill climbs. I’ve suffered through packs with skimpy padding before, and let me tell you, those extra ounces of cushioning are worth their weight in gold after a few hours on the trail. Plus, the adjustable sternum slider distributed the weight like a champ, saving me from the dreaded shoulder strain.

Oh, and the hydration tube access port? Brilliant! Staying hydrated is non-negotiable out there, and this made it so easy to grab a sip without stopping to wrestle with my bag. (Quick heads-up: you’ll need to bring your own hydration pouch, it’s not included).

A Few Things to Chew On:

Alright, so the backpack performed like a champ, but there are a couple of minor points to consider. The product details clearly state “not water resistant.” I got caught in a brief downpour, and while the stuff inside the main compartment stayed reasonably dry, I’d definitely recommend snagging a rain cover if you’re expecting wet weather. Better safe than soggy!

All in all, the Highland Outdoor 44L Backpack is a fantastic choice if you’re after a versatile and budget-friendly pack. It’s comfy, roomy, and keeps things organized, making it a winner for day hikes, weekend getaways, and even just everyday life. Sure, it’s not fully waterproof, but a rain cover is an easy fix. For the price, you really can’t go wrong. I’d happily recommend it to anyone who’s just getting into hiking or backpacking, or even if you just need a reliable all-around backpack to have in your arsenal.
