Exporting Maps to PDFs from Multiple mxd’s using arcpy
Hiking & ActivitiesDitching the Drudgery: Batch Exporting Maps to PDFs Like a Pro with ArcPy
Let’s face it: some GIS tasks feel like they were designed to suck the life out of you. Manually exporting dozens, even hundreds, of map documents (.mxd files) to PDF? Definitely one of them. I mean, who has time to open each one, click through the export dialog, and repeat, repeat, repeat? Not me, and probably not you either. That’s where the magic of automation comes in, specifically using ArcPy, Esri’s Python library, to batch export those maps and reclaim your sanity.
ArcPy: Your Secret Weapon for GIS Automation
Think of ArcPy as your trusty sidekick for all things ArcGIS. It’s a Python site package that comes bundled with ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Pro, and it lets you automate pretty much anything you can do in the software. The arcpy.mapping module is where the real power lies when it comes to map documents. Need to update data sources across a whole project? arcpy.mapping has your back. Want to tweak the symbology of layers in multiple maps at once? You guessed it, arcpy.mapping is the answer. And, of course, it’s the key to effortlessly exporting MXDs to PDF.
The Star of the Show: ExportToPDF()
The workhorse of this whole operation is the ExportToPDF() function. It’s simple, but incredibly effective. You feed it a map document, tell it where to save the PDF, and boom – you’ve got a PDF. The basic syntax looks like this:
python
