Does Copper Sun have a movie?
Space & NavigationSo, About That “Copper Sun” Movie… Is It Happening?
Sharon M. Draper’s “Copper Sun.” What a book, right? Published back in 2006, it’s a story that really sticks with you, a raw and unflinching look at the horrors of slavery. We’re talking about Amari, a young girl ripped from her home in Africa and thrown into the nightmare of American slavery, and Polly, an indentured servant just trying to survive. Their paths cross, and they find strength in each other as they fight for some semblance of freedom. It’s powerful stuff.
Which naturally leads to the question I’m sure a lot of you have: Is there a “Copper Sun” movie? I mean, with a story like that, it practically screams for a big-screen adaptation.
Well, here’s the deal: As of today, August 4, 2025, nope, there’s no official “Copper Sun” movie. Bummer, I know. Despite the book’s well-deserved fame and all the awards it’s racked up – including being named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Best Books of All Time – Hollywood hasn’t jumped on this one yet.
Now, don’t get it twisted. One of Sharon Draper’s other amazing books, “Out of My Mind,” did get the movie treatment, and it’s available on Disney+. It even premiered at Sundance in 2024! Maybe the success of “Out of My Mind” will light a fire under someone to finally bring “Copper Sun” to life on screen. Fingers crossed!
Honestly, it’s a bit of a head-scratcher why “Copper Sun” hasn’t been adapted already. We’re living in an age of YA book-to-movie adaptations. Think “The Hunger Games,” “Twilight,” “Love, Simon” – all massive hits! These movies prove that these stories resonate with audiences and can be a huge success.
And “Copper Sun” has all the right ingredients! It’s got heart, it’s got grit, and it’s got characters you can’t help but root for. Amari and Polly’s journey is just begging to be seen on screen. Plus, the historical setting, while definitely a challenge to get right, could be absolutely stunning visually. Imagine those sweeping landscapes and the stark contrast of the plantation life.
I even stumbled across a fan-made Prezi presentation online, laying out potential casting choices and locations for a “Copper Sun” movie. It just goes to show how much people want to see this story told!
So, the bottom line? No movie yet. But hey, never say never! “Copper Sun” is a story that deserves to be seen and heard, and hopefully, someday soon, it will be. Until then, we’ll just have to keep dreaming and maybe start a petition or two!
