Earthquake Update: What’s Shaking in Puerto Rico?

So, has Puerto Rico felt any tremors today, August 9, 2025? Well, the answer is yes, things have been a bit shaky. Over the past 24 hours, there’s been some seismic activity near the island.

VolcanoDiscovery reports that we’ve seen about 7 quakes around San Juan in the last day alone. The strongest of the bunch? A magnitude 3.2 that rumbled about 45 km north of Carrizales. Nothing major, but definitely enough to make you take notice.

Now, EarthquakeTrack.com is showing even more action, clocking in 14 earthquakes of magnitude 1.5 or higher around Puerto Rico in the same timeframe. However, the biggest quake in the general vicinity actually hit Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, measuring a 4.2.

Living in Puerto Rico, you kind of get used to the occasional shaking. It’s just part of island life, you know? The island sits right on the edge of the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates, which means we’re no stranger to seismic activity. As Victor Huerfano, who heads up Puerto Rico’s Seismic Network, pointed out a few years back, we’ve got these shallow quakes that pop up along three faults in the southwest – Lajas Valley, Montalva Point, and the Guayanilla Canyon.
