Cruising the Crescent City: Your Guide to NOLA’s Blue Bikes
FactsCruising the Crescent City: Your Guide to NOLA’s Blue Bikes
Want to explore New Orleans like a local? Forget the streetcar for a bit and hop on a Blue Bike! These electric-assist bikes, run by the non-profit Blue Krewe, are popping up all over the city, offering a super convenient and eco-friendly way to get around. Plus, let’s be honest, dodging potholes on two wheels is way more fun than sitting in traffic. So, how do you actually use one of these things? Let’s break it down.
First things first: you’ll need the “Blue Bikes Nola” app. Seriously, download it now from the App Store or Google Play. Think of it as your key to unlocking the city. Once you’ve got it, creating an account is a breeze. Just punch in your phone number, name, and email, and you’re halfway there.
Now, about those plans… Blue Bikes gets that everyone’s different, so they’ve got a few options:
- Just cruisin’ around? The “Pay As You Go” plan is perfect. As of October 1st, it’s just a buck to unlock a bike, then 35 cents a minute. Not bad for a spontaneous adventure.
- Regular rider? The monthly membership is where it’s at. For $25 a month, you get a whopping 60 minutes of free ride time every day, and no unlock fee!
- On a budget? Blue Bikes For All is an awesome program for New Orleans residents on Louisiana Purchase (S/NAP) or Medicaid. We’re talking $4 a month for 60 minutes of daily ride time. To sign up, download the app, enter your info, tap the “?” icon for customer support, and send them a pic of your S/NAP or Medicaid card. Easy peasy.
Alright, you’ve got your account set up. Time to find a bike! Open the app, and you’ll see a map showing all the available Blue Bikes nearby. Head to the closest one, tap “Scan” in the app, and zap that QR code on the handlebars or the lock. Click, and you’re in business! Just unhook the lock tether and stick it under the seat – you don’t want that thing flapping around.
Now for the fun part: riding! But before you zoom off, a few quick tips:
- Helmet, people! Blue Bikes strongly suggests wearing one. Your head will thank you.
- Give it a once-over. Adjust the seat, ring the bell, and make sure the lights work if it’s getting dark.
- Pretend you’re in driver’s ed. Obey traffic laws! Stop at red lights, yield to pedestrians, the whole shebang.
- Ring-a-ding-ding! Let people know you’re there with that bell.
- One earbud only! Gotta stay aware of your surroundings.
So, you’ve had your fun, and it’s time to park. Here’s the deal:
- Bike racks are your friends. Find a designated Blue Bikes station or any public bike rack within the service area.
- Lock it up good. Use that tether to secure the bike to the rack.
- App time again. Lock the bike, then tap “End Trip” in the app. You might even need to snap a pic to prove you parked it right.
A few more things to keep in mind:
- Stay in the zone! The Blue Bikes service area is marked in the app. Go outside it, and you’ll get hit with a $25 fee. Ouch!
- Park anywhere (almost)! Want to ditch the bike closer to your destination? You can lock it at any public rack within the service area for a $2 convenience charge. Just remember to lock it to something solid and end the trip in the app.
- Don’t hog the bike. You’ve got a 6-hour limit. Plenty of time for a leisurely tour.
- Bike availability? It’s not always guaranteed. Stuff happens.
- Be a Bike Saint! Blue Bikes members can actually earn a free month by returning bikes that are parked out-of-station to official hubs. Karma points and free rides? Yes, please!
The Blue Krewe is always working to make things better. They’ve got some serious funding coming in to buy new bikes, expand the service area, and even train more e-bike mechanics. The goal is 2,500 bikes by 2025!
Bottom line? Blue Bikes are an awesome way to see New Orleans. They’re good for the environment, good for your wallet, and a whole lot more fun than sitting in traffic. So, download the app, grab a bike, and get cruisin’!
