How long does it take for Basalt to cool?

Lava cools very quickly at first and forms a thin crust that insulates the interior of the lava flow. As a result, basaltic lava flows can form crusts that are thick enough to walk on in 10-15 minutes but the flow itself can take several months to cool!

How long does it take for a lava flow to cool down?

Based on the cooling rate calculation, it could take roughly 8 months to 1.5 years for flows of these thicknesses to solidify. Solidification of flows ranging 20–30 m (65–100 ft) thick could take about 2.5–6 years.

What is a basalt flow?

Basalt flows are noneruptive, voluminous, and characterized by relatively low viscosity. They generally advance less than one mile or kilometer per hour on gentle slopes and may reach more than 30 mi (50 km) from their source or erupting vent.

Why does it take lava so long to cool down?

Since lava is a poor conductor of heat it cools slowly under neither the outside crust. Also the insulating properties of lava causes it to cool slower and slower over time. Thick stacks of lava flows (30 m or 100 ft thick) can take years to cool completely.

Does magma cool slowly or quickly?

The magma cools very slowly. As magma cools minerals are formed into an interlocking arrangement producing an igneous rock. As magma cools it undergoes reactions that form minerals. The rate of cooling is very important.

Does magma or lava cool faster?

This magma will also cool, but at a much slower rate than lava erupting from a volcano. The kind of rock formed in this way is called intrusive igneous rock.

Calculations show that such a volume of granite magma would take several millions of years to cool down from 900°C to near 550-650°C, where it would totally crystallize, and then finally to cool to the 25°C temperature found at the earth’s surface.

Water has been found to be the most practical means to achieve lava cooling. Water absorbs heat from the lava; even more so, if it heats up to the boiling point and changes to steam.
