Converting a distance to a map distance
Hiking & ActivitiesIf the scale is a verbal statement (i.e. “1 inch equals 1 mile”), determine the distance by simply measuring it with a ruler. For example, if the scale says 1 inch = 1 mile, then for every inch between the two points on the map, the real distance on the ground is that number in miles.
How do you convert distances to actual distance on a map?
To calculate distance on a map you must do the following:
- Measure distance between two points on a map in cm or mm.
- Multiply this by the scale of the map and divide by 100 000 if you used centimetres or by 1000 000 if you used millimetres to get kilometres.
How do you convert actual distance to scale?
Quote from video: So for example if we have a distance of three point two centimeters on the map. Then to find that in reality we multiply this times two hundred thousand. So we take three point two centimeters.
What is map distance over ground distance?
Map scale refers to the relationship (or ratio) between distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground. For example, on a 1:100000 scale map, 1cm on the map equals 1km on the ground.
How do you calculate map scale?
Find a map of an area you want to use. Find both the actual and measured distances of two points on your map. Divide the actual distance by the measured distance on the map for your scale.
How do you convert km to cm on a map?
To work out the distance on the map, we need to divide this length by 50000. 4.5 km = 4500 m = 450000 cm. Dividing 450000 cm by 50000 gives a distance on the map of 9 cm. Alternatively, we could have just remembered that each 0.5 km in real life is 1 cm on the map.
How much is 1 cm on a map?
means 1 cm on the map represents 50,000 cm in real life. There are 100,000 cm in 1 km so we can think of this as 1 cm representing 0.5 km or as 2 cm representing 1 km.
What size is a 1 50000 scale map?
Solution: The scale 1:50000 means that 1 cm on the map represents 50000 cm in reality.
What does 1 50000 mean on a map?
An important number, which can cause initial confusion, is the scale. This gives the ratio of the map distance to the distance on the ground. This might sound complicated at first, but it simply means that with a scale of 1:50,000 one centimetre on the map represents 50,000 cm on the ground.
What is the difference between actual distance and scale distance?

Does Google map Show exact distance?
You can measure distance on Google Maps to give you the approximate mileage between any two points (or more) that you place on the map. When using Google Maps on a computer, right-click a spot on the map and choose Measure distance, then just click to add more points to measure the distance.
What is the difference between actual distance and scale distance?
The scale indicates the proportion which a distance between two points on a map bears to the distance between the corresponding points on the actual ground. For instance, an actual distance of 5 miles is represented on the map by a distance of 1 inch, the scale is 1″ = 5 miles. Was this answer helpful?
