A numbered street is a street whose name is an ordinal number, as in Second Street or Tenth Avenue. Such forms are among the most common street names in North America, but also exist in other parts of the world, especially in Colombia, which takes the system to an extreme, and the Middle East.
Why are American streets named after numbers?
Numbering streets may not be as much fun, but it certainly helps keep people going where they need (and want) to go. The number system set a precedent so that anyone, no matter where they were from, could show up in a city and figure out what direction they were supposed to be going based on the numbers around them.

Oak Street can become Pine Street before going back to becoming Oak Street; Chipmunk Cheek Road can morph into Squirrel’s Nest Drive at an intersection.

Even numbers should always be on one side of the street, and odd on the other. Common practice is to place even numbers on the north and west sides of streets and odd numbers on the south and east sides of streets.

The first east-west Street north of Houston Street was named “1st Street”, the next was “2nd Street”, and so on. The Avenues were also numbered, and the numbering started at the East River, which in those days was the more important river for shipping.

The town of Eighty-Eight, Kentucky, is in Barren County, near Glasgow. It was named in 1860 by postmaster Dabnie Nunnally, who figured that “88” would be readable even in his own bad handwriting. The number came from the amount of change in his pocket.
What do the numbers on street names mean?
That number represents the addresses you’ll find on the block of that street. I’ve seen some that showed a range (i.e., “300 – 350”). Your response is private.
How are street addresses numbered?
The orientational numbers are arranged sequentially within the street or square. If the building is on a corner or has two sides, it can have two or more orientation numbers, one for each of the adjacent streets or squares. Solitary houses distant from named streets often have no orientation number.
