ReviewASOLO Falcon GV: A Hiking Boot That Might Just Surprise You
I’ve always been a “go big or go home” kind of hiker, especially when it comes to boots. Ankle support? Non-negotiable. But lately, I’ve been feeling a bit… weighed down. I craved something lighter for those quick day trips, something that wouldn’t make me feel like I was lugging around concrete blocks. Enter the ASOLO Falcon GV.
Honestly, when I first unboxed them, I wasn’t blown away by some crazy, futuristic design. Instead, they had a classic hiking boot vibe with that suede and nylon upper. Picking them up, though, that’s when I started to get intrigued. They were surprisingly light. And the promise of Gore-Tex? Well, let’s just say my feet have a knack for finding every puddle on the trail. So, yeah, I was cautiously optimistic.
Hitting the Trail:
The real test came on a recent jaunt in the Smoky Mountains. Think rocky climbs, tangled roots, and the occasional creek crossing – the perfect proving ground. My first thought? These things are quick! The midsole gives you plenty of cushion without that sinking feeling, and I felt way more agile than usual.
That Vibram sole? Seriously grippy. I was clambering over slick rocks with a confidence I usually reserve for dry pavement. And on those loose dirt sections? No problem. Now, I will say, on some of the really uneven, rocky bits, I did notice a little wobble in the heel. Nothing major, but worth keeping in mind if you’re planning on tackling some seriously gnarly terrain.
Then came the rain. Not a downpour, but a steady drizzle that’s enough to turn any hike into a soggy slog. My feet? Bone dry. The Gore-Tex did its thing, and I was genuinely impressed. Plus, they breathed well! No swamp-foot situation, which is always a win.
A Few Little Things:
Okay, so no boot is perfect, right? The Falcon GV has a couple of quirks. The toe box felt a little snug, even after a few hikes. If you’ve got wide feet, definitely consider sizing up or grabbing the wide version. Also, the laces? They had a tendency to loosen up after a while. Double-knotting them seemed to do the trick, but it’s something to keep in mind.
Final Thoughts:
All in all, the ASOLO Falcon GV is a solid pick for hikers who want a light, nimble boot for day hikes and shorter backpacking trips. You get a nice mix of comfort, support, and weather protection, and that Vibram sole is seriously impressive. Are they the best choice for super rough terrain or hauling heavy gear? Maybe not. But if you want to feel more connected to the trail without sacrificing the essentials, these are definitely worth a look. And the fact that you can resole them? That’s a huge plus in my book.
Who Should Snag These:
- Day hikers and weekend warriors
- Hikers who want to feel light and fast
- Anyone who hikes in all sorts of terrain
- People who like the idea of resoling their boots
Maybe Pass If:
- You’ve got super wide feet (unless you get the wide version)
- You need maximum ankle support for crazy-rough trails
- You’re planning on carrying a ton of weight
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
