Did Monterey just have an earthquake?
Regional SpecificsDid Monterey Just Get Shaken Up? Let’s Talk Earthquakes
So, has Monterey just had an earthquake? Well, as of today, August 12, 2025, things have been a little shaky, but not in a “the big one” kind of way. There’s been some recent seismic activity around Monterey County, and it’s always good to keep an ear to the ground (pun intended!) when it comes to these things.
What’s Been Happening?
Okay, let’s break it down. Over the last 24 hours, Monterey County has had a few little rumbles, nothing major – topping out at a magnitude of 2.1. These tiny quakes are pretty common in California; you often don’t even feel them. But still, they’re happening.
Looking back over the past week, there was a slightly bigger one – a magnitude 2.6 – over in San Benito County, which is about 15 miles east of Soledad, right in Monterey County’s backyard. In fact, there have been around 41 quakes in the Monterey area in the last week!
Earthquake Swarms: A California Thing
Now, what’s interesting is that we sometimes see these “earthquake swarms.” Remember back in February 2024? Monterey County had a real flurry of activity – five quakes between 2.6 and 3.3 in just a couple of hours! These swarms are basically a series of smaller quakes that happen close together, and they’re often linked to the San Andreas Fault. It’s just the earth doing its thing.
A Little History Lesson
While these recent quakes have been small, it’s a good reminder that California is earthquake country. I remember when that magnitude 5.0 hit east of San Jose back in October 2022 – you could definitely feel that one! Of course, the big one everyone talks about is the 1906 earthquake, which was a massive 7.9. Let’s hope we don’t see anything like that again anytime soon.
Staying in the Know
Want to keep an eye on things yourself? Here are a few resources I always check:
- The USGS (U.S. Geological Survey): These guys are the experts. They have real-time data on earthquakes all over the world.
- The California Earthquake Authority (CEA): They’re all about preparedness and safety. Good to know what to do if things get serious.
- VolcanoDiscovery: They keep a close eye on earthquakes in the Monterey area.
The Bottom Line
So, to sum it up: Monterey hasn’t had a major earthquake today, but there’s been some minor activity. Living in California means being aware of earthquakes, but don’t let it keep you up at night. Just stay informed, be prepared, and hope for the best!
